Firefox 139: User wallpaper on a new tab and translation of the expansion page

Posted on May 28, 2025

A new final version of the Firefox 139.0 browser has been released with the possibility of choosing a user background image for a new tab, support for a translator on the internal pages of additions and an experimental function of the pre-examination of links.

The new tab in the browser can now be not only white or dark, but yours. In Firefox 139.0, support for user wallpaper and background colors appeared – both their own and from the new category of Celestial wallpapers.

The function is unfolding gradually and so far by default is not turned on for all users. To enable the function, use the Firefox Labs settings section (about:settings#experimental).

At the numerous requests of users, full-page translations are now available on the pages of Firefox extensions starting with the address Moz-Extense: //.

Link Previews

Link Previews is currently available as an experimental function that can be turned on through Firefox Labs in Firefox settings.

After turning on, use the ALT+Shift key combination when pointing the cursor to the link to see preliminary viewing in action.

The window with the reference view includes a title, image and a short report on the contents, generated by built-in AI.

Other changes:

  • PNG images with transparency now keep their transparency when pasted into Firefox.
  • The upload performance of HTTP/3 has been significantly improved, particularly on resumed connections (QUIC 0-RTT) and high-bandwidth and high-delay connections.
  • Due to recent changes in how Chrome encrypts user data on Windows, the Firefox migration wizard can no longer directly import payment methods or passwords from Chrome. However, users can still export passwords from Chrome to a CSV file and then import them into Firefox using the migration wizard or the password manager.
  • The Review Checker feature is shutting down and will no longer be available after June 10, 2025.
  • Various security fixes.
